When the days are like dreams you can’t quite remember.
This is a selection from a short photo essay of a man named Vern.
Vern has had Alzheimer’s for roughly 4 years.
Alzheimer’s is defined as a progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age, due to generalized degeneration of the brain.
The day that I shot these photographs was the day that I met Vern. From what I’ve learned of him and his life he is incredibly intelligent, successful, spontaneous and loving. I was very honoured and privileged meet Vern and shoot these photos. My intent was to create dignified portraits of Vern as a person and not simply an Alzheimer’s patient. Where his memory has faded his emotions and personality, although somewhat buried, are still present and very real and this is what I aimed to capture.
This was a very emotional shoot for me, and I am very grateful to the family for giving me permission to share these with you all. My hope is that these humanize a disease that I feel doesn’t often doesn’t have adequate visual representation surrounding it. I hope you enjoy the photographs and take something from them.
